What is this domain – and what does it tell us about wellbeing?

Institutions and governance create the conditions that shape opportunities for wellbeing. This domain examines how effective local governance and institutions are in supporting wellbeing, by examining whether community members feel able to get involved – and to be listened to – in local decision making, whether local leaders step up, and whether local organisations work well to achieve good community functioning.

Importantly, this domain is not about government specifically – but about how all the institutions operating in a community, including laws, policies, government, and organisations work to provide a good quality of life for all; and whether local decision making processes are inclusive, transparent and effective.
